Type almost anything into Google and you'll likely get an AI Overview: a generated paragraph sitting above the traditional blue links. Add &udm=14 to the end of the URL and that box disappears, leaving something close to the results page Google ran for two decades. Nobody at Google has ever written this parameter up on Search Central, and no engineer has explained its numbering. It works anyway, and a growing number of SEOs paste it into a URL out of habit. What ?udm=14 actually does
On May 14, 2024, Google's Search Liaison account, run by Danny Sullivan's team, announced on X a new filter: "We've launched a new 'Web' filter that shows only text-based links, just like you might filter to show other types of results, such as images or videos." The stated reasons: people reading longer documents, people on slow connections, people who just want text. That filter is what udm=14 triggers.
Try it. Search something ordinary, "best budget laptop 2026" works, and Google will likely show an AI Overview at the top, sources cited underneath, the classic ten links pushed down. Click "Web" under the search box, sometimes it hides behind a "More" menu, and the page reloads. Gone: the Overview, the knowledge panels, the ads. Tedium reported the same experience three days after the original announcement, calling it "essentially Google, minus the crap." The address bar now reads &udm=14. One value gets called an "AI Overview toggle" by a single source and directly disputed by another, so it's left out of the table above. Treat it as unresolved, not as a working feature.
The disagreement thins out around the two values Google itself gave a public reason for. Past that, it's guesswork with a spreadsheet attached. One data point still suggests a limit exists. The researcher behind Unfurl pushed udm into unassigned territory, 56 and higher in that testing. Google stripped the parameter each time and redirected to standard search instead of erroring out. That's one person's testing, not a published spec. It points at a bounded, validated list, not an open range anyone can extend by guessing bigger numbers.
Unofficial and unstable by definition
Nothing in that table comes from a Google document. Every value was reverse-engineered by outside testers, and Google has changed URL parameters without notice before. How-to posts dated into January 2026 confirm udm=14 still worked then, but that's the honest ceiling for anything this undocumented. Check it before building a workflow around it.
What does "udm" even stand for?
Two guesses circulate, neither confirmed by Google. SUSO Digital proposes "User Display Mode" and says plainly that it's their own guess, not a documented expansion. The 2025 dates above trace to statements attributed to Hema Budaraju, Google's VP of Product Management for Search, consistent across the outlets reporting them. They weren't each checked individually against a primary Google post for this article. Treat them as well-corroborated, not Google-sourced the way the May 2024 announcement is. Escaping AI Overviews is only half the picture, though. If your actual goal is showing up inside them, that's a separate set of confirmed and unconfirmed factors worth reading on its own.
Line the two timelines up and the coincidence stops looking like one. As generated summaries became the default view across more countries and languages through 2025, the one URL trick that switches them off got more attention, not less, which plausibly explains why a query like "udm parameter" collects search interest with almost nothing written about it.
Is udm=14 a real SEO diagnostic, or just a party trick?
Some SEOs use udm=14 as a quick check: search a query your page targets and see how it looks in the plain list once the Overview stops sitting on top. Others wave it off, since almost nobody searches with the parameter attached on purpose.
The second view undersells it. Almost nobody types &udm=14 manually, true, but that's not the point. The point is isolating one variable: an AI Overview and a classic result list pull from overlapping but not identical ranking and snippet logic, so comparing the two for the same query tells you whether a visibility problem is the Overview crowding the page, or the page just not ranking well either way. Open question: does udm affect your analytics?
No published testing confirms or rules out that the udm parameter changes referrer strings, Google Analytics attribution, or Search Console query data for the site being visited. This is genuinely unclear. If you rely on referrer data to separate AI Overview traffic from classic-result traffic, don't assume udm explains a gap until someone actually measures it.
That's the honest shape of it: a debugging shortcut, not a documented feature.
